French Horn Lessons in Edinburgh

Because the French horn demands good breath control, embouchure and precise hand position in the bell, we generally recommend starting from around age 10, though keen younger players are always welcome to come and try. Lessons cover tone production, hand-stopping technique, and the reading skills needed to move confidently between orchestral, brass band and chamber repertoire.

For exam-focused students, we work towards ABRSM and Trinity College London graded syllabi from Grade 1 through to diploma level, alongside SQA National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher music where relevant. For those learning purely for pleasure, lessons can be shaped entirely around the repertoire and playing opportunities that interest you most.

Descended from the natural hunting horns of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the French horn only gained the valves that let it play a full chromatic scale in the 1800s, one of the last brass instruments to modernise, which partly explains its reputation as a technically demanding but hugely rewarding instrument to master.

Adult beginners are very welcome, including retirees keen to join a local orchestra or brass ensemble. We pace hand-position and breath-control fundamentals carefully so progress feels achievable from the first lesson.

French Horn lesson FAQs

Do I need my own French horn to start?

Not for your first few lessons. We can advise on hiring or buying a suitable instrument once you're ready to practise between sessions, taking into account your budget and how serious you are about progressing.

What age should my child start French horn?

Most children are ready from around age 10, once they have the lung capacity and coordination the instrument demands, though we're always happy to meet younger, keen beginners for a trial lesson.
